8 Tips for Being Your Own Best Friend and Enjoying Some Alone Time

We live in such a busy world where, for the first time, we have the ability to never truly be alone. Whenever we have a moment to ourselves, we can easily take out our phones and see what our friends, family, and even strangers are doing at a moment’s notice. In fact, because we are so interconnected, we may even find that we struggle with being alone altogether.

Personally, I believe there’s great value in finding peace in solitude. Even though we may be more connected to others than ever before, whether physically or digitally, we might find ourselves feeling lonelier than ever. That’s where my belief in being your own best friend comes into play.

It’s important to treat ourselves the way we would treat our best friend, with love, kindness, and patience, while enjoying our own company. It’s about finding peace and comfort internally, so we’re not constantly searching for it externally.

Lately, I’ve been leaning into the idea of self-care and making a conscious effort to enjoy quiet moments with myself. Here are some simple, nourishing ways I’ve embraced spending time alone, and you might enjoy them too.

1. Solo Breakfast Date

Enjoying a quiet meal alone has been incredibly refreshing. Whether it's at a café or making something special at home, taking the time to sit, savour your food, and enjoy your own company is a wonderful way to start the day.

2. Window Shopping with a Coffee

This is one of my favourite solo rituals. I’ll visit a local café, order a coffee, and go for a walk, taking in the sights, browsing shop windows, and letting my mind wander. It’s a simple pleasure that combines movement, mindfulness, and a touch of indulgence.

3. Take Yourself to a Movie

Is there a film you’ve been wanting to see? Treat yourself to a night out or matinee. Grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the experience.

4. Sit in Nature

Spending time outdoors, whether it’s gardening, walking barefoot in the grass, or sitting under your favourite tree, can be incredibly grounding. Nature has a way of calming the mind and restoring perspective.

5. Go for a Drive

I must admit, I don’t drive as much as I used to, but there’s something special about hitting the back roads with the windows down and your favourite playlist on. It’s a moment of freedom and joy that’s hard to replicate.

6. Try a Little Getaway

How about escaping to a spa, booking a cozy Airbnb, or staying in a hotel by yourself for the night? It might feel indulgent at first, but solo retreats can be deeply relaxing and offer a much-needed chance to recharge your mind, body, and spirit.

7. Outdoor Yoga

One of my favourite ways to unwind is slipping out into the yard with my yoga mat. A few quiet poses under the sky, surrounded by nature, leaves me feeling calm and grounded every time.

8. Visit the Library

Lately, I’ve been enjoying some quiet time at the library to read, journal, or simply soak in the peaceful atmosphere. It’s a wonderful space to be alone, yet surrounded by the hum of other quiet seekers.

Whatever you decide to do, remember this: spending time with yourself, your longest and most loyal companion, can be a powerful way to renew your spirit. Being your own best friend isn’t just a mindset; it’s a practice, and a beautiful one at that.
