5 Ways to Put Yourself First

Whenever you fly, regardless of the airline, flight attendants always remind you of the same thing during their safety presentation: put your oxygen mask on first. Why? Because in the event of an emergency, you'll be better equipped to help those around you if you're breathing properly. It makes a lot of sense. Imagine trying to put an oxygen mask on a frightened child when you're gasping for air yourself, versus when you're able to breathe comfortably. When our own needs are taken care of, we're better able to focus on the task at hand.

This concept resonates with me when I think about the value of showing up for yourself.

Putting yourself first can be hard to do, as we are often conditioned to put others before ourselves. But similar to the airplane example, it becomes extremely difficult to focus on the needs of others when we're neglecting our own. In the Reiki community, we talk about the notion that we cannot pour from an empty cup, because if there's nothing left in you, you have nothing to give. Today, I want to share a few ways to keep your cup full and show up for yourself.

5 Ways to Put Yourself First

1. Commit to Fitness

Fitness is an excellent way to show up for yourself. Whether you work out at home, go to a gym, walk with a friend, or practise yoga by yourself, fitness can add years to your life and life to your years.

2. Invest in Your Appearance

Putting your best foot forward is about tending to your hygiene, choosing clothes that you love, and ensuring that they are in good repair and clean. Appearance does matter. When we look good, we feel good.

3. Set Boundaries

Showing up for yourself by setting limits is a healthy way to live. Learn to say no and not feel guilty. Stretching yourself too thin can result in burnout or illness.

4. Treat Yourself

Have you always wanted to have a facial or a massage? Take advantage of an opportunity to indulge in some self-care. An afternoon of self-care can go a long way in this hectic, modern world.

5. Emotional Health

Show up for your emotional well-being by talking openly about your feelings with a trusted friend or a professional. Journalling, walking in nature, taking an afternoon to rest, and getting enough sleep are ways to recharge. Often, our emotional health is negatively impacted by a lack of sleep.

Be a reliable person for yourself. So many times we show up for others but forget about ourselves. It's time to prioritize your own well-being and health.
